Program Notes: Surréalisme is a solo guitar work relating to the Surrealism art movement in the early 20th century. Surrealism is best described as blurring lines between fantasy and reality. The subtitle, “The Son of Man,” is named and inspired after the surrealist painting of René Magritte.

The painting, “The Son of Man,” depicts a large green apple covering a man’s face. Magritte explains the painting’s meaning as “Everything we see hides another thing.” To accurately depict this, a central melody is hidden/disguised various times throughout the piece.
