Program Notes: A Pyrate’s Voyage is a three movement horn quartet relating to the highs and lows of being a pirate at sea. Each movement has a diverse theme and story involving the people of the ship. The movements include:
I. “Departure”- The first movement, “Departure,” is about the pirates beginning their new expedition. While leaving the docks of their native land, they are singing, dancing, eating, and of course, drinking, in order to celebrate this new voyage. Overall, everyone on the ship enjoys being on the clear blue waters.
II. “Songs of the Sirens”- The second movement, “Song of the Sirens,” is about all the members of the ship slowly being lured by the angelic songs of the beautiful sirens. However, as they approach the sirens, they soon discover that the beautiful women are actually evil creatures preying upon them. Thankfully, they escape the mesmerizing sirens in the end.
III. “The Storm”- The third movement, “The Storm,” is about the ship going through a ferocious storm. The members on the ship have to withstand: thunder, lightning, heavy rain, unsteady waves, and harsh winds. However, the crew of the ship persevere through the horrific weather.
